best american excerpt from a military blog-zachary scott-singley

the blog entries that i read were actually quite touching. the author, i felt, was very torn apart by specific memories that hit him every now and them. although he had a lot of remorse for the family he met, he was also acknowledging the fact that it is a soldiers duty to kill or be killed. the people in the sights of his weapon are in the same position as he is and they have to kill the enemy if they ever want to see their families again. i enjoyed reading it because i could really get a feel for how exactly he felt because my uncle had been in iraq himself.

the insurgent's tale-tom downey

this excerpt in the book wasnt as appealing to me as the because it was simply facts being stated. i couldnt really tell if he was a soldier or not just by reading the story if i hadnt read the title otherwise. straight facts were just being talked about such as ambushes and various experiences. this specific author was basically matter-of-fact about everything too. he said what needed to be said and was done with it. simple as that.

both reads were interesting to compare to each other. by reading both, you could really point out the differences and see what elements are present in each. the first read was the blog which was more on the sympathetic side while the other was not including any form or emotion. both can somehow be compared but it is simply two different stories from two very different people. one that is haunted by his past experiences while the other just goes about what he is told to do without really caring much. the overall tone of each is what sets these two reads apart.
